Laurel Burch is a well-known artist for her original cat artwork which translated into colorful jewelry, paintings, T-shirts, scarves, tote bags and ceramics.
Laurel Burch started her journey as a 20-year-old single mother retrieving metal in junkyards which she hammered into jewelry to support her two children. She went on to become a renowned designer and a successful business woman.
Throughout the years Laurel created a collection of fantastic felines which she transformed into colorful jewelry, paintings, T-shirts, scarves, ceramics and tote bags, which are sold by thousands of stores.
In 1979 she started Laurel Burch Inc. with full control as president and chief designer. By the mid-1990s she was devoting most of her time to business matters. So, in order to dedicate herself to art again, she licensed her designs to several companies that make and distribute them around the world.
She described herself this way on her Web site:
“I live within the vivid colors of my imagination … soaring with rainbow feathered birds, racing the desert winds on horseback, wrapped in ancient tribal jewels, dancing with mythical tigers in steamy jungles.”
Laurel suffered from osteopetrosis, a painful bone disease she had her entire life, suffering more than 100 bone fractures as a result. She passed away in 2007 due to complications from her bone disease.
Laurel’s spirit continues to live through her fantastic felines which delight cat lovers all over the world and her life is a truly inspiring story of success and capacity to surmount difficulties.
