A few years ago Jeremy Feig was at rock bottom – broke, alone, and living in a shoebox-sized apartment. That’s when he had a revelation – his cat was perfectly happy and had many lessons to teach him. This is the basis for this book.
The book is a funny self-help book for guys, based on the lessons of his black cat named Shelly. Guys can find useful advice on topics like relationships, dealing with stress, and even grooming habits.
Even though I’m not a guy – as you may have noticed :), I still enjoyed reading the book. The author’s dry and slightly abrasive humor made me laugh and his frank stories reminded me of episodes in my own life. Basically what he’s trying to tell us is to be independent, persistent and never give up – just like cats (while maintaining a regular grooming routine).
One of my favorite excerpts from the book:
“No matter how many tricks I tried to teach Shelly, she never performed a single one. Despite the countless times I’d pull her off my computer keyboard, she’d hop right back on. Whenever she wanted to cuddle, it would always happen, no matter how inconvenient it was for me. As far as Shelly was concerned, she ran the show, and her wellbeing was all that mattered. That’s what’s being a cat is all about. And that’s why I took her as my mentor.”
The author’s abrasive humor and the stories featuring the bad ass Shelly.
The use of the word “chick” throughout the book. It gets a bit annoying.
Rating: 4 Paws (Good)
Mister Cat’s Opinion
“My new bedside reading! Finally a guy who understand cats are a superior species!”
Overall I think it’s a fun book to offer your boyfriend or husband if he is a cat person. Do you think your better half would enjoy reading this book?
